The City of Killeen Civic and Conference Center invite eligible artists to apply for consideration to demonstrate their carving talents during the spring arts festival, "Take 190 West – Killeen Salutes the Arts" sponsored by Seton Hospital, Harker Heights.
THE EVENT
On February 27-March 2 of 2013, the City of Killeen Civic & Conference Center & Visitors Bureau, together with the Killeen Independent School District (KISD), will host a week- long salute to the arts.
Events include a student art show, juried professional artist exhibition and sale, authors and illustrators book sales and signing, a 5th grade book writing contest, stone sculpture contest, metal demonstration and pottery demonstration.
Sculptors will compete in an on-site contest. Limestone blocks measuring 12” by 12” by 24” will be provided for carving. Interested artists must be available to begin working on their sculpture Friday, March 1 from 8 a.m. to "chisel down" on Saturday, March 2rd at 4 p.m. Awards will be presented at 5:00 pm. Selected artists will receive a stipend of $100 to carve their artwork and have the opportunity to compete in the onsite sculpture competition. Selected artists will have their accommodation on Friday night provided for them.
ELIGIBILITY
Participation is open to all artists.

- 1st Place $1500.00
- 2nd Place $1000.00
- 3rd Place $500.00
All pieces completed will remain at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center OR the Seton Hospital of Harker Heights for a period of one year.
ARTIST AGREEMENT
Artwork must be the original creation of the artist
Artwork must be appropriate for public viewing and not be of any offensive nature
No advertising will be permitted on your images, including words and symbols.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Please send the following:
- Updated resume, which outlines your qualifications to be a featured artist
- A description and explanation of your proposed artwork.
- A sketch or image of your proposed artwork and three (3) additional images of your past work
- File Format: Baseline JPEG (do not use progressive JPEG format)
Compression: Please size each image to be no more than 1.8 MB in file size. On average, each image will roughly be 1.2 MB. Larger is not necessarily better.
Acceptance/rejection notification: December 30, 2012
Competition: March 1 & 2, 2013
SELECTION PROCESS
An appointed jury panel made up of community members and local visual artists will review and select the artists on a competitive basis to participate in the Sculpture Contest 2013. Completed sculpture will be judged on Saturday, March 2rd and prizes will be awarded to winners Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
MATERIALS
Artists are required to bring all the necessary tools to carve on site, including a table or work station. The stone block will be provided. The City of Killeen will provide electricity and a tent in which the carving is to take place. |
